Executive Summary

 Tokio Marine Egypt is the Egyptian office of one the oldest and largest insurance companies on the globe. They deal with many disciplines of the insurance industry with a focus on the maritime sector such as container insurance ad life insurance.

The challenge

The client’s has developed .NET application that integrates with systems from  the global Logistics giant Maersk with the purpose of managing and applying for insurance policies on the shipped goods, they were looking for a highly secure cloud environment to host the application to ensure that only personnel from Maersk has access to the systems in an isolated yet public environment.

Without the presence of the perfect environment for the .NET application, the client would lose critical operational speed and more importantly, compromising important data to the ever-growing cyber threats.

EC2 for Windows

Tokio Marine choice was Amazon EC2 for Microsoft Windows Server Delivery Partners as their integration choice as it both highly secure and scalable. EC2 was perfect for their colossal-scale operations, and integrates seamlessly with their windows-based environment.

Amazon EC2: Security, Scalability, and Elasticity

We started with installing a Windows Server machine as a private subnet EC2 instance in order to host the .NET application, followed up by installing Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS) and .NET application runtimes, along with an RDS Microsoft SQL database managed on an internal subnet.

We implemented a public subnet load balancer for distributing tasks with the available resources, with a restricted security group to ensure access from only Maersk designated sites in Egypt, all behind a strong Web Application Firewall (WAF) to filter, monitor, and block any malicious HTTP/S traffic traveling to the Tokio Marine web application.

We did all management through a terminal services host on the public subnet, and seamlessly integrated the terminal services server and the .NET app with the Simple Directory Service , ensuring perfect, secure communication between them.

Flawless Operations

To this day, the performant, highly secure solution we implemented continues to work flawlessly as personnel from Maersk manage insurance policies from Tokio Marine.

Using Amazon EC2 for Windows Server Partners was the perfect solution for the client as it saved them hundreds of hours of work due to high cloud performance, all with fewer costs than alternatives.
