Enterprise Cloud Operations, Security & Resilience

Powering One of Egypt’s Leading Real Estate & Development Groups

Change. Adapt. Accelerate.

1. Executive Summary

Amer Group is one of Egypt’s prominent real estate and integrated development companies, operating complex enterprise workloads on AWS including SAP services, MySQL databases, and customer-facing applications. Amer Group engaged VArrow Technologies under a Managed Services contract to stabilize, secure, and optimize their AWS environment.

VArrow’s team delivered end-to-end managed operations – covering firewall management, rapid infrastructure provisioning, real-time observability, dedicated campaign support, WAF governance, OS compatibility resolution, automated SAP service recovery, enterprise-wide alerting, and Disaster Recovery architecture consultation. The result: a significantly more resilient, observable, and operationally efficient cloud environment that performs reliably even under peak campaign traffic.

3. The Challenge

Prior to the structured managed services engagement, Amer Group’s AWS environment faced a range of operational and technical challenges that were impacting reliability, security, and business continuity:

  • FortiGate firewall roles were inconsistently configured, creating security gaps and management complexity
  • AWS resource creation was slow and manual, delaying project delivery and campaign readiness
  • No application logging or traffic insights, making troubleshooting reactive and time-consuming
  • Frequent performance issues during marketing campaigns caused by MySQL and application instability under high load
  • AWS WAF rules were not adapted to accommodate API integrations with partner organizations, causing integration failures
  • Windows Server was running the Azure Edition, which is incompatible with the AWS environment, causing random instance shutdowns and unexpected service downtime
  • SAP services running on Windows would drop and require manual intervention to restart, causing prolonged service outages
  • No alerting or notification infrastructure existed to proactively flag AWS workload anomalies or incidents
  • No Disaster Recovery strategy or DR architecture was in place for critical workloads

4. Solution: VArrow Managed Service Delivery

VArrow Technologies provided a comprehensive, ongoing Managed Services engagement covering all layers of Amer Group’s AWS environment – from network security and infrastructure operations through to application reliability and business continuity planning.

4.1  FortiGate Firewall Role Management

VArrow’s team took ownership of maintaining and configuring roles on Amer Group’s FortiGate firewall. This included rule reviews, role hardening, and ongoing governance to ensure the firewall configuration remained aligned with security best practices and the evolving needs of the business.

4.2  Rapid AWS Resource Provisioning

VArrow enabled Amer Group to create AWS resources in significantly reduced time through streamlined provisioning processes and infrastructure-as-code practices. This reduced delays in project delivery, environment setups, and campaign preparation.

4.3  Application Insights & Traffic Logging

VArrow enabled comprehensive application logging and integrated App Insights to provide Amer Group with real-time visibility into actual traffic patterns and application behavior. This data became the foundation for faster troubleshooting, capacity planning, and informed decision-making during incidents.

4.4  Campaign Hot-Line Support for MySQL & Application Incidents

During high-traffic marketing campaigns, VArrow provided dedicated on-call support for Amer Group’s MySQL database servers and application layer. Real-time intervention during campaign windows resolved performance bottlenecks and stability issues, resulting in a noticeably smoother application experience for end users even under peak load conditions.

4.5  AWS WAF Rule Management for Partner API Integrations

VArrow maintained and updated Amer Group’s AWS WAF rules to accommodate integrations with partner organization APIs. This involved careful rule modifications to ensure legitimate partner traffic was permitted without compromising the security posture of Amer Group’s applications.

4.6  Windows OS Edition Migration (Azure to AWS-Compatible)

A critical root cause analysis identified that Amer Group’s Windows Server instances were running the Azure Edition of Windows, which is not designed for or compatible with the AWS environment. This incompatibility was causing random instance shutdowns and intermittent service disruptions. VArrow coordinated the migration to an AWS-compatible Windows Server edition, permanently eliminating the random shutdown issue.

4.7  AWS Systems Manager Runbook for SAP Service Auto-Recovery

To address the recurring issue of SAP services dropping due to Windows OS limitations, VArrow designed and implemented an AWS Systems Manager (SSM) Automation Runbook. The Runbook continuously monitors SAP service health and automatically triggers a service restart whenever a drop is detected – reducing SAP service downtime to near zero without requiring manual intervention.

4.8  Enterprise-Wide Alerting & Notification System

VArrow implemented a high-fidelity notification and alerting system across all of Amer Group’s AWS workloads. Using Amazon CloudWatch, SNS, and EventBridge, the system ensures that any anomaly, threshold breach, or incident requiring action is immediately surfaced to the appropriate team – dramatically reducing mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to respond (MTTR).

4.9  Disaster Recovery Architecture Consultation

VArrow provided strategic consultation to Amer Group on designing and implementing a high-availability Disaster Recovery architecture for their critical workloads. The engagement covered DR strategy selection, architecture design incorporating AWS Route 53 failover, RDS Multi-AZ deployments, and Pilot Light or Warm Standby patterns – ensuring business continuity in the event of a regional or workload-level failure.
